We all know movies can be critic-proof, but can they also be disappointment-proof? Apparently they can. There's nothing really to recommend "TRON: Legacy" over any other empty-headed CGI extravaganza like "Transformers" -- except that it's a sequel to "TRON." The story *idea* is intriguing (Flynn having disappeared so many years ago, etc.), but an idea is all it remains. The film is dramatically inert, and while the overall plot makes sense, the individual scenes often don't. I was also a little bummed that very, very little effort was made to make this new digital frontier resemble the world of the original movie. I realize it had to be updated, but as corny as the original was, they did at least make an effort to demonstrate how things in the digital world related to things in the real world. The glowing circuitry in the programs' suits, commands from the users, actuarial programs, etc. In this new film, it's more like an alternate universe that exists independently of the outside world, and has no relation to it. The original idea was specifically about video games, so the gladiator stuff made sense. Video games, however, apparently have nothing to do anything going on in this movie, so what's with all the gameplaying? Etc. All that said, I loved it. Yep, I loved a dramatically-stillborn, nonsensical movie. Because it's a sequel to "TRON." I'm trying to remember if this has ever happened before, and I don't think it has. I can't make any excuses for the film, but I'll buy it, and watch it. Probably often. On the upside, the action scenes are thrilling, and the special effects are awesome. It was a rush to see the lightcycles and disc battles, as well as the new lightjets. I love the way they've opened all the games up to multiple dimensions, and I was surprised and intrigued by what they did with some of the characters, specifically Flynn and TRON.
