True Grit

Saw it tonight, found it fantastic. Jeff Bridges is such a star. Young
Hailee Steinfeld is sharp, smart, and terrific, and reminded me of
nothing so much as Megan Follows in the first "Anne of Green Gables"
mini-series. Matt Damon is solid, Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper are
fine, but a bit wasted. I've never seen the original, as I'm not a
huge fan of John Wayne or westerns in general, but this movie
surprised me by how funny it is. And not "dark, quirky, Coen Brothers"
funny, just plain laugh-out-loud funny. It's not a comedy by any
stretch, but in Rooster Cogburn they've certainly found the lighter
side of a pretty dark character. I enjoyed this movie immensely, and
wouldn't mind seeing it in the theater a second time.

I'm wondering if the weekend estimates might end up being low. We went
to the 2:45 matinee today, only to find it sold out -- something I've
not experienced in years. We then tried to get tickets to the 5:15
show, but it was also sold out. We finally got tickets to the 5:45,
and when we arrived around 5:30, the theatre was so packed the manager
had to come in and ask everyone to move to the center of their rows to
make room. Before the lights dimmed, I did a quick scan of the room
and saw no available seats, so I'm assuming this show sold out as
well.

Maybe Omaha is anomaly, but I know they work out the box-office
tallies Sunday morning, based on the performances of Friday and
Saturday night, but Christmas and Christmas eve were factors, and I
wonder if Sunday will end up being bigger than estimated.
