I don't think there *is* a "widely accepted take" on this film, apart from 
the fact that it's playing with our expectations.  It might be a true 
movie that rings false, rather than a false movie, per se.

How does that line from Touch of Evil (1958) go?  "Just because he speaks 
a little guilty, that don't make him innocent, you know."
