I've thought about this. I try to put myself in the other guy's shoes. I
first thought of 'venerable' but it also contains a religious vibe. I
checked-down to 'revered' but discarded that for the same reason. I finally
wound up with 'greatly esteemed' (where the focus is horizontal, esteem
coming from men, rather the vertical, blessed by God).
