Well, that depends how the elections turn out, surely...?

I mean, okay, nobody nowadays cares much about Kerry, or Dole, or Dukakis,
or Mondale... but I think people still get some mileage out of Gore, and
people once got some mileage out of Goldwater, etc., no?

Side note: My list of candidates who were nominated for the presidency but
never won was compiled from memory... and it may or may not be germane to
your point that the first year for which I drew a blank was 1972, i.e. the
election that took place when I was only 2 years old. If I had to
*guess*, I'd say it was McGovern ... and according to Wikipedia, I'd be
right! But I obviously didn't have a clear *personal* memory of that
election, the way I do with all the subsequent ones. (Well, okay, I don't
have a clear memory of the elections in 1976 or 1980, either, but in
*those* cases, the loser was the incumbent, so he didn't qualify for my
list.)

Hmmm. If nominees are forgotten after a couple decades, how long does it
take to forget an actual *president*? I mean, presumably people *do*.
Forget presidents, that is. Who, apart from a history major, could say
anything intelligible about Fillmore, or would even realize that that was
the name of a man who once presided over the United States?
