I think they were suggesting that if he is an enemy of America he is subject
to the rules of war where you can indeed be shot. And its an idiotic and
irresponsible thought in opinion.

Of course whether he deserves to be caught and tired, that's another issue.

So, wasn't there a politician theatening Julian Assange recently. Saying he
should be assasinated or hunted down like a terrorist or something.

That sounds kind of menacing.

I don't totally disagree really. I am a huge free speech advocate, but that

the court docs and see.

What the heck is a sense of menace? Does it come with a grrrrrr? Or is it
typed in all caps?

If he took actions that made a reasonable person fear an imminent assault
then he should most definitely should be held to account, but barring that I
don't see what he could have *said* that deserved criminal charges.

He could be sued civilly for intentional infliction of emotional distress
and I don't have a problem with that. But I don't like throwing the
enormous weight and power of the federal govt. behind offensive speech.

I do. I heard he specifically threatened 47 people. If any of the threats
had any sense of menace, he likely deserves what he got.

I'll be honest that I haven't read it but I got the sense that these were
only written or verbal threats. Being the free speech absolutist that I am
that shouldn't be enough to get arrested. Speech without action shouldn't
be a crime. Hmmm I suppose in some circumstances like bribery or blackmail
implied action is enough. But I think you know what I mean.

And were any of them bad enough to justify this?

Yes. If (and that's a big if) there is ever a need for uncivil discourse and
violence...it should be directed there, IMO. I mean, how many times will you
allow a thief to break into your home and steal from you before you buy a
shotgun and wait for him?

I guess I had better be more careful with my rhetoric.
