So, for the last two decades or so, I've been writing for (and sometimes
editing) a Christian community newspaper. And sometimes, in my stint as
an editor, I was called upon to turn a particular writer's prose into
something actually publishable. Why did they keep giving this guy
assignments? Mainly because of inertia, I suppose, but also because he
had once had some celebrity in the field that he was writing about.

Anyway. I've dialled back most of my writing these days, due to being a
stay-at-home parent and everything (and in March, I'll be signing the kids
up for soccer practice via the Canucks Autism Network... which means that,
yes, I will soon be a soccer dad...), but the one gig I had been holding
on to all this time was my monthly column for that newspaper...

And then, a few months ago, the editor that I had been working with since
1992 resigned. And then, a couple weeks ago, I got a phone call from the
guy who was filling in for him, telling me that the non-profit society
that runs the newspaper was shutting it down completely.

And then, a few days ago, while discussing my final column with one of the
soon-to-be-laid-off editors, I discovered that the-guy-who-was-filling-in
is starting up a new "Christian lifestyles" magazine. "But what," I
asked, "about the *existing* lifestyles magazine," which was already being
published by the non-profit society (and which had just changed its name,
following the editor's resignation)? Not the same thing, I was told.

So, not to be too sensationalistic about this or anything, but there seems
to be a sort of schism brewing... and I honestly have no idea if I'll be
continuing with *either* side. But the first semi-*official* thing I
heard about this *new* lifestyles magazine came today... when one of my
Facebook friends posted a link to the new magazine's website, which is
still very much under construction. And who *is* this Facebook friend of
mine who apparently has the inside scoop on this publication, which I do
not have? Why, the writer who couldn't write, of course.

Make of that what you will.
