Paul, last year my Mom was in the hospital, and in my heart-of-hearts I knew she wasn't going to come out alive. Just before she died, I preached a homily, telling my parishioners about how much I had prayed, how I had brought her Communion, had done the service of the Anointing of the Sick; how I had lit candles for her every Sunday. And she died, and died on Holy Thursday, April 1. She died anyway. She didn't get better.
I didn't really have any answers for my parishioners when I preached about Mom and my prayers; I didn't have any answers for myself, when I preached that homily. I don't have any answer for you right now about your dad, and whether your prayers will "make any difference" for your father or your family. Pray anyway. Even if you don't feel you can believe in prayer or even in God. And know that you're not alone in the pain, the frustration, or anything else, right now. And I pray that God's will, and not necessarily your father's or anyone else's, be done, and that, no matter how it goes, you'll find God's peace in your heart.'
