I think it comes down to trusting the audience to follow along, at least in
gist mode, with a complex story. Inception didn't need explanatory voiceover
to hold our hands - it was a good call to go back and resurrect the film
without the clunky voiceover. (Whether you think Ford sandbagged the
voiceovers as a mechanism to try to prompt the study in the right direction
or not, he does rather make the point self-evident - there is a place for
Noir voiceover ala Philip Marlowe but this wasn't it.)
