Billy Ray strikes me as a guy in a very tricky place, somebody who's both
fighting against what everybody thinks and yearning for everybody's
approval. It is no surprise he comes across as anguished as he does. That's
no way to live.

And yet, there but for the grace of God go I, right?

I find him a sympathetic if flawed figure. He talks like he values
righteousness but hasn't actually plugged into righteousness. That kind of
thing isn't a lifestyle, something you find in Kentucky or Tennessee but not
LA. That's something you have as a by-product of good decisions, not by
living in the right ZIP code.
