I don't know if I'd heard that before, but that's rather sad.

Libya, incidentally, is the country in which Cyrene is located -- as in 
"Simon of Cyrene", the man who helped Jesus carry his cross (and whose 
wife may have been "a mother" to Paul, a la Romans 16:13).

Apparently the book of 2 Maccabees is said to have been based on the 
writings of a Hellenized Jew named Jason of Cyrene, too.  And there are 
other references to Cyrene in the New Testament, as well.
