I just saw a think CNBC by Jim Kramer, (the booyah guy for those unfamiliar with him). I take Kramer for what he's worth, but anyhow - he was saying how much he liked Canadian banks as investments and that they play by different and better rules than US banks do - they aren't allowed to speculate and double deal they way they are here - so that while the upsides might not be as drastic there is much, much less downside. As far as renting/owning - I sure wish I'd been renting I couldn't sell my house and ended up being foreclosed - it all depends on where you are, but down here home ownership is no longer the panacea it once was. I guess Canadians are the only ones, on this continent, left with a shot at the American dream. Mike F. ________________________________ From: Peter T. But even if it had ... owning your own home is preferable to just about anything else, yes? And of course, the sooner you start paying to own your own home, the sooner you will truly *be* the owner (as opposed to sharing ownership with the bank). (And, as also previously noted, if I had started owning my own home back in 1999, I would have quite a bit more equity now, even *after* taking into account the capital loss since the crash of 2008.) > FYI, got a call from my landlord.
