Well, I don't want things to sound *too* cozy at my end.  The reason we 
sold the old apartment (which we had been renting out for three years) is 
because the loss of my part-time job combined with the increased costs of 
dealing with our son's autism meant we had to simplify, streamline, etc. 
And if we didn't have a bit of equity left over from the sale of that 
apartment, I don't know how long we could continue to live on just D's 
salary.  (As it happens, the twins start kindergarten in September, so I'm 
hoping I can find some work to do while our youngest is in preschool.)

Oh, and in the interests of full disclosure:  D works for the public 
library, which means she gets her paycheques from the City of Vancouver -- 
and, yes, she is a member of a public-sector union.  (And if memory 
serves, the strike that the library workers went on in 2007 was the first 
strike that the library workers had *ever* gone on.  Ever.)
