I honestly don't remember. And given how union- and strike-friendly this
province has been, historically (I'm referring to the province as a whole,
not necessarily to the government), I was kind of surprised that the
library workers had never had a strike before.

And just our luck, they had it during the year *between* D's maternity
leaves. So, after living on reduced salary via E.I. for one year, and
knowing that she would have another year of reduced salary via E.I. in the
following year, my wife had to spend a few weeks or months on the picket
line ... at reduced salary. ("Reduced salary" might not be the most
correct term, technically, but you know what I mean.)

What makes this all even crazier is that we actually bought a van *and*,
after that, a second apartment during that year. This was in 2007, before
the bubble burst -- but also at a time when the Canadian dollar soared
above the American dollar for the first time in decades, which meant that
my pay, a fair chunk of which came from the U.S. back then, was also
taking a hit. And yet somehow we bought our second apartment. Yowzers.
