I have really taken a hard look at my beliefs with this. If we support the removal of bastard thug dictators, he is easily in the top 5. That said, my instinct was to oppose our action there. This came about when rebels tried to overthrow the government and he fought back against them. They were hiding in the public so innocents were getting hurt. Does even a dictator have the right to defend his regime against an armed revolt? What litmus test do we apply when deciding which existing governments are legitimate and allowed to defend themselves against an uprising? I think we are setting a precedent I am not comfortable with and it seems to follow "because the UN says so" more than anything. Had Kaddafi (or however it is spelled) just started killing civilians for no reason, then maybe the UN should intervene. But if a government cannot fight an insurrection? Will we support the IRA if they attack Britain in force? Or the Quebec separatists if they try an armed uprising? And I shudder to wonder what the UN would do if the US ever faced an armed revolt. And the rebels in Libya are supposedly a faction of or are linked to Al Qaeda. Why are we supporting them? I also note that while some on the left are hypocritically supporting this, some on the right are hypocritically attacking it and that also troubles me. As I said, I have taken a quiet approach here because I am frankly not sure how to respond.
