Yes it did. The soviets at the time were our enemy and supplying the Mujahadeen helped them defeat the Soviets and deter them from expansion. That is the real politik and it was the right thing to do at the time. It's the same with supporting Saddam in his war with Iran. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, even if only temporarily.
