Maybe it was the content and substance of what he said more than who. In fact, as I recall it was less that as it was the way teachers were told to follow up with it and the impression that it was intended to encourage activism and such. I think there was some substance to those complaints, the teaching plan was a bit creepy. But yes, I do remember the fact that other presidents had addressed kids before. As I also recall, the democrats had kittens when GHW Bush did this in 91, and his message was more generic as near as I can see. To me, anytime we start stuff like this with kids is dangerous. Advertisers know how easily kids are led, so do politicians. But back to the point, I still think the comparison is a bit odd. He was not the first President to do so-yet he was the first accused of being some sort of threat to children for it.
