I'd say Watergate killed it...as much as people like to lionize Reagan, I suspect that was more acting ability than some grand quality of leadership.  I don't remember it being that great growing up (it wasn't hideous, but not utopia either).

But I think it all starts with Watergate-which birthed a real solid cynicism towards our leaders that was different from decades before.

It's interesting to me that my mother-no fan of Obama does not, and cannot vote for any of the current options that are toying with running...Pawlenty, Gingrich, Bachmann, Trump, Palin, etc are more troubling to her than Obama-whom, I repeat, she does not like.
