“What do they teach in schools these days?” You need go no further than Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state_in_the_United_States#Former_state_churches_in_British_North_America There were a number of states that had at least quasi-state churches and religious requirements for holding office. The founders were concerned with creating a nation and to do so were exceedingly sensitive, and permissive, of what individual states could do. What the founders would be astonished at is the lack of state sovereignty that exists these days. I’m not making the argument for or against state rights just relating the facts regarding the realpolitik at the time the US became a nation. Mike F.
