Yea, I have heard people advocate the fair tax for all those reasons. I think it has potential, but then again people already claim sales taxes hurt the lower income disproportionately, so I don't expect that to change either. At least with a baseline flat tax in theory everyone shares the load. Of course, the real problem is with how the money is wasted by the government, but that is another argument. But any taxation based on income is a form of extortion. I know that is whacko talk but the idea that your labor, at least a portion of it, is repugnant, to me at least.
