Well, attempting to sum it up...hell is not just a future place, but a present reality, even for the living. But hell still exists as a post death place..but it is not necessarily permanent location for people. It's not simply punishment-rather a refinement. That for a time some would be there-but get eventual opportunities at acepting God's love and forgiveness (one would suppose that just like your point of the death bed, no amount of time would result in turning to God for some).
I am piecing this together from reviews, not a personal reading. I am trying to get a chance to sit down and really read the book solidly through...I got a copy a few weeks back... but I may not get to until I go on vacation at the end of May. But Bell has been very to the point that he believes in hell.
