But as she said, and polls seem to verfiy, Trump was gaining traction and it 
wasn't just among republicans.  I think Obama would have loved to let 
republicans continue to be tainted by birtherism but Trump was taking it beyond 
that and making it more mainstream.  If nothing else people were starting to ask 
why Obama wouldn't just release the doggone thing to shut Trump up, and the fact 
that he wasn't doing that made them wonder.  


And to Karl's question - I tend to think Trump won on this because Obama ended 
up doing something he was not planning on doing.  It is will be very tough sell 
to convince people, me at least, that releasing the thing was what Obama wanted 
to do.

To Althouse's point, I had wondered by Obama didn't let the Republicans stew in 
the controversy a little longer. If Trump is going to be a player in the 
upcoming election, let him go further out onto the limb.
