The winner that year was Amadeus (which was also about music! :) ).

The other nominees that year were The Killing Fields, A Passage to India, 
Places in the Heart and A Soldier's Story.

And since you mentioned actors, the winning actors that year were F. 
Murray Abraham (for Amadeus), Sally Field (for Places in the Heart; this 
was when she made her famous -- and frequently misquoted -- "You like me, 
right now, you like me!" speech), Haing S. Ngor (for The Killing Fields) 
and Peggy Ashcroft (for A Passage to India).
