I think affirmative action and quotas need to be distinguished. I have no problem with a *private* employer or school actively seeking out disadvantaged persons and giving them the benefit of the doubt in hiring/admission. I don't think it should be based on race because that is illegal and unjust. Basing it on class/socioeconomic status accomplishes the same thing and isn't the same kind of affront to fundamental fairness. Government, however should not be doing anything of the kind. The constitution is supposed to guarantee equal protections under the law for all and it is applied to the states through the 14th amendment. And quotas are flat out wrong and despicable. Nepotism and affirmative action are not exactly equal. I find nepotism far more problematic (whether it is Bush or Kerry) than affirmative action. Of course, I am not of the mind that Affirmative Action was an evil.
