and the other >always bad.

In a world where all were treated as equal that would be true. One is about
opening up opportunities for whom much is denied (Affirmative Action).

**no it isn't. Maybe it was, but not any more.

The other about opening doors for those to who much has been given.

**you assume nepotism also equates wealth. Fail.

Affirmative Action is about helping people who were help back by the culture
and government. To argue they are the same is pretty disingenuous.

***bull. People take advantage of affirmative action programs all the time
who have never been held back 'by the man'. Maybe that was true a few
generations ago, but not so much any more.

>If you condone either, you are saying some are more equal than others.

If you condone affirmative action, this is true.

***glad we agree?

You are acknowledging that for quite some time? The deck was stacked
against certain groups.

***and that the remedy is to make other groups more equal?

For much of our history, some people *were* more equal than the others.
And that is why Affirmative Action was created, to fight that disparity.
You can argue that it is less needed now, but Obama isn't going to school
now. He went to school in a time when the inequality was there.

***maybe so, but then if you accept that it was necessary then, then asking
whether he was covered by it is hardly off base.

And are you really going to claim we live in a society where all are equal?
Where the poor man has all the opportunities of the rich man?

***Affirmative action is more concerned with race then class.
