FWIW, I thought Obama's speech was fine, actually just right for the circumstances. I'm glad bin laden is dead, glad it was our guys that got him, glad that he knew it was coming, (as opposed to a missile strike), and glad justice was finally served. It is a good day when one who stands for the evil he did is taken down. My second reaction was "death is terrible". My third reaction was "Oh >dear, what kind of lofty brings-us-all-together-as-one speech will Obama try to >spin out of >*this* event." I wonder if someone, somewhere is getting ready to >ask George W. >Bush for a statement on this. > Bush and Cheney (and Clinton) have all released statements. And I am pretty sure Bush would have gave a similar speech. In fact, I didn't realize that the news was reading a statement issued by Bush at first-it really mirrored the President's announcement. I get the ambivalence over celebration of his death... at the same time, I do not really begrudge the relief that his saga is at an end. I mean, hey, I would be perfectly happy is that had captured him alive. He served a valuable symbol running around and dodging us for so many years. In that sense, it is a good thing, though it doesn't mean terrorism is over.
