And why was not her experience with energy and oil not given more credence?

I had heard of her too, both on Ace of Spades and Hot Air. She was
considered something of an expert on energy policy and had impressed some
with her speeches.

TV, schmee-vee. The question is, how involved in national political affairs
can you be when you govern a sparse and barely-populated territory that is
physically cut off from the rest of your nation?

**and the point is that in the modern age, that is irrelevant. She has all
the same communications devices as any other governor. It is an insulting
question, like Alaska is filled with hicks who use string and cups.

What knowledge have you picked up by rubbing shoulders with other
politicians? How many constituents, and what sorts of issues, have you been
responsible for?

***she was a well known politician, she had been tagged as a rising star
before, and had been a keynote speaker. At least I had heard of her prior
to her being tagged as a possible running mate.

Etc., etc. I'm not saying the governor of Alaska (or Hawaii, for that
matter) wouldn't have *some* experience in these areas, but it doesn't
surprise me at all that such governors tend to be unknown outside their
states, or that no one but Alaskans and politics junkies (like Douthat) had
a clue who Palin was when McCain nominated her for veep.

***I think she was far more well known that you realized.
