I can accept all of that. As Bruce pointed out, ignorance is not
necessarily a harsh negative or an insult, but I think what caught my nerve
was the extent of the presumed ignorance.

Yes, I absolutely agree that many evangelicals are ignorant of the church
history. But, as I noted, I found many lifelong "cradle" Catholics to also
be very ignorant, and not just of the Evangelical world, but of their own
faith and the church history as well. They believe what they believe and
always have believed it because they were raised to believe it. Same with
ANY faith. Most people in most faiths are raised to it and never seek below
the surface.

In my RCIA class I knew more about Catholic history and doctrine than one of
the teachers did, and I had to dispel many myths that the teacher had about
not just evangelicals but or Mormons as well.

Ignorance is pretty widespread.

But the extent that Lance seemed to take it just was too presumptuous.

I think it is safe to say that the evangelical camp of protestantism, in
general, is ignorant in matters of early church history and doctrinal issues
that go beyond what they hear in the pulpit on Sunday morning. I don't
think pointing that out is a bad thing or a sign of a superiority complex.

OTOH declaring that a significant number of self professed christians are
"about as far away from authentic Christianity as Christendom has ever
seen." does strike me as a bit elitist, or condescending. And it certainly
begs the question of what "authentic Christianity" is and what one has to
do/say/believe to be an authentic christian, while at the same time
suggesting that the declarant has the definitive answers to those questions.

That being said I know when I refer to young earthers I can be very
condescending. But I wouldn't question the authenticity of the
christianity, even if I am questioning their intelligence.

But a lot of them are.

***I would suggest that perhaps we should define ignorance then.

Seriously, how often do you hear people talking as though the major
faultline in Christendom was between Catholicism and Protestantism?

***are you suggesting it is not a major faultline? There are some
fundamental (no pun intended) differences and the hard headedness is on both
sides.

And how often do you hear evangelicals screw up what it is that Catholics
actually believe?

wrong about evangelicals?

Eastern Orthodoxy simply isn't on the radar for most of them, and if it
were, they'd get *that* wrong, too.

***how nice of you. Maybe they would, but that is not necessarily a reason
to trash them.

Liberals are *everywhere*, aren't they. :)

***if that's how it works for you, sure.
