Well, I don't know much about that latter part.  Did he say that?

I've always taken his denouncing of the God of the Bible as either a  
denouncing of our current evangelical understanding of the God of the  
Bible, or of the crazier parts like those that condemn menstruating  
women as unclean or say blessed are those that kill your enemies  
children, or some such.  I've really got nothing to come back against  
those condemnations.

But perhaps I misunderstand him.  Or perhaps he has changed in later  
years.
