I mean, the earliest Christians believed that God is One and that Jesus is God -- and this is why they split off from all the other Jews. The full doctrine of the Trinity didn't come until later, but it basically grows out of the fact that these two ideas (and one or two others) had to be affirmed simultaneously in a way that made sense.
