To answer the question you posed, yes. If you fear that your home is being broken into and your reaction is pick up a shotgun, then, yes, you are making a decision to oppose violence with violence (or, at the very least, with the threat of violence). If you do that, then let there be no surprise when you end up a victim of violence. Whether or not violence is an acceptable option for defending your family, well, that's a personal decision. These days I'm past the point of calling it "wrong," but I have no issue with calling it foolish. This story is an excellent example of why.
