Yep.  CFLs contain mercury which is toxic, and in some states you are not
legally allowed to just toss them.

And apparently just turning one on is bad, they say they emit phenol,
naphthalene and styrene.

I've been hearing that if the newfangled lights fall and break, there's a 
heck of a lot more clean-up that needs to be done because of all the toxic 
gases etc., whereas the older lightbulbs left you with nothing but broken 
glass.
