I am kind with you here.  I think his comment was clearly insensitive, and
perhaps to those who were fans/family/friends of the guy, tacky.

But at the core of what he said, he was speaking some uncomfortable truth.
If he was drunk, his carelessness killed him and someone else, and maybe we
should start asking families and friends to own up to some sense of
responsibility when they do nothing and people die.

Of course, according to news reports alcohol has yet to be determined to be
a contributing factor, so perhaps that was Ebert's real crime, assumption.

Again, was what he actually said wrong? I don't think so. Insensitive,
perhaps, but my tolerance for drunk drivers is nil. If he was some average
Joe driving drunk, he was a jackass. If he was a celebrity driving drunk
whom many people genuinely liked, guess what? Still a jackass.

Ebert was perhaps crass for pointing out the truth, but that makes the truth
no less relevant. Sorry he's dead and that his passenger paid the ultimate
price for taking that ride with him. Still, he had a history of driving too
fast, and he'd been drinking before he left the bar. Roger's not a villain
in my book for commenting on that.
