Yeah, no PINE or SSH.  If you had a server you could SSH into, though, I
think PINE could handle an IMAP connection. :)

Google also gives around 7.6GB storage for the free edition of hosted apps,
now, so as much as you download your mail for local backup/archival, it'd be
a long while before you needed to delete anything in the account to free up
space.
