Leo Fender really left us some amazing contributions.. I own 7 basses (think you can find most of them posted in the photos section here), but find myself mostly going back to my 2 Vintage G&L's.. Have an El Toro (Red) and an Interceptor (Black) I bought mine in '84 (so they maybe slightly older than that)I think mine are solid Maple- You are right about weighing as much as a tank, but strapping on anything else seems inadequately inferior (got to build those Lat Muscles up !).
The "slap" tone of a bolt-on, but the sustain close to a thru-body (stock active pickups/pre-amp give it that punchy Music Man edge, but with far more tonal possibilities- like splitting the pickups or choosing Neck/Bridge in combination with SLAP KaBOOST). Very balanced weight distribution (unlike those BASSWOOD bodies with most un-natural fighting neck-heavy diving...) I say both because I usually leave one tuned in Eb, the other in Drop Db - seems like this covers almost all basses (except fretless) and hardly find myself playing my 5 String Jazz (just more strings to change.. ha ha) Whenever I go to a music store that sells G&L, I pick up one of the new basses (got to be at least one of the US models, the Indonesian ones feel like they're made out of Balsa wood), and though they look really nice, they just don't feel as sturdy, rugged, or comfortable- in my hands anyhow... Like you need to add on about 10 more lbs or something... :-)
