You can pick up a decent set of tuners cheaply enough from outlets like Stew-Mac and such if that is your only complaint with the OLP.

Interesting thread here.  I have been playing bass for some 35 years now and have only owned four bass guitars and one upright Kay bass.  My first bass was an Aria Diamond, a copy of a Beatle bass that I never liked because it was neck-heavy which means I constantly needed to hold it up, and it was semi-hollow-body and had feedback issues.  

I got rid of it almost as soon as I bought a mid-70's (1976 maybe?) model Fender Precision fretless.  I bought that in 1979 from a desperate college student for $275, and for most of the past 30 years had been my main/only bass.  

About three years ago I bought an OLP 5-string, a $250 knock-off of an MM3.  I did this because a good friend of mine had his expensive Taylor guitar stolen from his car at a gig, and I didn't want to be taking my P-bass to bar gigs anymore.  

Now, there's no mistaking an OLP for an MM3 but with that being said, this OLP has become my #1 bass.  I can quibble about the sticky tuners and the lack of craftsmanship on the neck, but the bass plays and sounds fine, good enough for bar gigs, and I like the added low range of the B-string, especially for the price.  I still use the P-bass for studio work and a few other occasional 'select' gigs.
