I'm with ya 100% Soul Man. Execpt maybe for including the Rickenbackers as a common bass back when we started playing. - Eventhough they were first I don't know anybody that actually owned one.

I couldnt agree with uoi more about everythiing else, though. What's with this custom shop  "road warn" crap? Don't things get beat up enough on their own as time goes by? I don't need anybody to wreck my instruments for me. I do a good enough job of that for myself.

I know there are antique snobs out there (that likely have never palyed out in their life) that will gasp in horror at this, but last year I refinished my '63 Jazzmaster  back to his beautifull 3 color sunburst glory. (His name is Cole Younger) I even added a touch of candy red in to make it look "deeper" and more radient which will reall put the snobs into a tail spin.  I bought this guitar brand new and now it looks almost as good as the day I bought it.

BUT THAT DESTROYED IT'S VALUE!  Bull Crap! Who want's to go on stage with an ax that looks like it was run over by a train? Did you ever hear of a wrecked 1963 Corvette with pealing paint winning a car show? "Restored" is what wins.  I don't wear the clothes I changed the oil in under my truck on stage either (Although I have see those that seem rto take pride in looking as crappy as they can on stage)

Now for an even more shocking revelation. I'm going to do the same thing to my mid 60s Jazz Bass! I don't know the exact year because I never had any reason to take the neck off  it and haven't checked the serial either - Bought it 'cause I like the neck. not for the year it was made.  I have only owned it for like 20 years and it had a few marks in it when I got it  but it's getting awfully ratty and he's due for a refinish (His name is Sam Bass, by the way).  I'm even going to replace the rusty control plate and Ashtray.  I don't want it to look like I don't give a damn about it.

Some of us want to look as good as we sound and a beat up instrument only shows a lack of pride and showmanship.

And value? Hell, mine aren't worth anything anyway,,,You see they aren't for sale at any price and never will be,,, as long as I am alive anyway. You see they are like old family members and to me they are priceless.

If  you buy a warn out bass you should pay LESS for it. Why pay extra to have somone make your brand new ax look like it was pulled out of a dung heap?

>When I started out, decades ago!, there was only fender, Gibson, and Rick. Then , the jap copies came along, and so did Sir Pauls', Beatle Bass. Along the way, Alembic came about, etc , etc. Then Anthony Jacksons', Idea for a new type of bass guitar, the contrabass guitar. First, he lower His tuning, on his P-bass, because he thought about the bass pedals on a Hammond b 3. Then, because Leo fender made his electric bass in a guitar company, it should of been "called , a bass guitar, instead of being wrongly called a electric bass. Well, Anthony, it is what it is. Now, this was the wildly 70's when all this stuff came about. more strings, vs more tone. Leo created again, The Musicman Stingray, and The sabre. Yamaha and Ibanez, made in either, Japan, or Korea, with all different options, necks, etc. Washburn, ESP, Guild, Carvin, and all other knock-offs.Then, the reissue deal.Older fenders' Gibson's and Ricks, are better(?") than their newer counterparts.
Pre-CBS, Fender japan, and then, Fender Mexico. Not to leave out, CBS fenders. There's a Squier line, then a fender japan(that only sells certain models in the US) Fender Mexico, which makes again, other models which Fender US doesn't make or (it does) makes south of the border. The custom shop, which really will disappear one day, because these new "road worn" models, that the custom shop use to make? Now Gibson, is doing the same thing, a new version of the Ripper 2? I like the Ripper, back in the day, but had a weird body. Ernie Ball musicman, first came out with the S.U.B. line, then it disappeared, only to come back as Sterling by Musicman? I believe, cheaper is better for the working musician, but come on guys, if you cut back on all these models, and just made what you're known for, I would think, things would be better, sales wise. Come on, The Fender Jaquar Bass? What's the purpose? When Leo made the Jazz Bass, it was because,it was to follow
behind the new Jazzmaster guitar. Remember, The new Jazz bass, it was more expensive than the P-bass, in those days. To me, many of these new basses on the market, are really "custom models", of what was there in the first place. Fender Gibson, and Rick. I'll give you a good example of what I'm talking about. A 1958 fender P-bass, then a fender American standard, then, a Fender standard(mexico) , then a "retro" 1970 fender P-bass(japan) , and a 1951 Fender P-bass(Japan) . Then after all that , you have a "road worn" 1950's Fender p-bass(USA), which the same thing is being made in Mexico? So, whats the deal?
