Steve... I agree 100%. 

We all know (don't we?) that when the volume goes into ridiculous territory, it goes there not as music, but as part of the "experience."  
But there certainly is a sweet spot somewhere (ignored, usually) where the volume and the music itself rings most true.

Many years ago I played with a guy whose band is now, last I heard, in the Guinness book as World's Loudest Band. 

Speaking of hearing, I'm clinically deaf in one ear, that being the one closest to the drummer I played with for years -- he was damn damn damn damn good.  But he was also damn loud.
