James, that's wonderfully valuable reporting. May I rewrite for the
web site?

Hello, Folks,
been enjoying the reads on the Hohner Celeste, (too bad about the
inconsistencies in production quality, though I'm used to this with
chromatics).
Thought I'd chime-in with my own experience concerning a Swan Senoir
bassharp, purchased from Groth Music (via Ebay), about a month ago.
Haven't had a chance yet to fully evaluate it, yet, but I can give you
a brief "out-of-the-box" report:
First impression was not all too favorable. This could partially be
due to the fact that I've been wanting one (or a Tombo Contrabass) for
some years now, and after reading a few very positive reviews (one by
Pat Missin, one by Winslow Yerxa), I had myself all lathered up and
excited: thoughts of effortless bass runs and soft, tenor
turn-arounds, riffs, and arpeggios haunted my dreams for years, until
I finally got the gumption (and the $120) to buy one.
After winning the ebay auction in a landslide (I was the only one)I
called Groth directly to complete the transaction, and was treated
very considerately by the one guy stuck in the shop on a weekend, even
though he was obviously slammed by eager Minnesotans needing their
instruments, guitar strings, picks, whatever, he went ahead and
processed my order so's when I called back on Monday, it was on it's
way!
This is A-1 service, in my books, and is what separates the best from the rest.
Okay, first impressions: upon opening the shipping box, I was
surprised at how large the Swan Case was (yes, I had read the specs
and knew it was about the size of one deck of a Hohner 265, or equal,
but I was just a little taken aback. As stated before, I believe I had
created a false expectation of a smaller, more manageable instrument -
not that it couldn't be, esp. with some real practising and getting
accustomed to it.)
Upon examination, the black (ABS) plastic comb had some marks and
scratches, and some of the holes had roughness around the edges,
probably fixable with a file and a little work.
Observing the shiny chrome cover plates, something looked a bit out of
place. The "Swan" logo stamp on the top did not say "Swan Senior" as
in the advertised pieces I had seen prior, it just said "Swan Bass".
Hmm... not a big deal, really, but did make me wonder if I got an
older (if not a different) model?
Other than that, the covers where perfect, no scratches of noticeable
imperfections.
I will continue this soon ... and we'll find out what happened when I
blew a note (in front of my entire family, all waiting to hear how
this huge, shiny, expensive (to them... $120 for a harmonica?)
purchase will sound!
Until then,
James Archer-Payne
