For just a couple of quid more you can replace the whole display with an LED backlit one. Much brighter and should last a very long time. Some self adhesive foam sponge rubber is also worth getting to go around the surround like the original display. I also desoldered and removed the inverter block and jumpered across the 5 volt supply so I could use the original connection plug for the LED backlight.
