If I remember correctly, the (stock) K5 is a bit noisy. When you replace the resistors the overall output goes up but the noise dB remains the same, so the signal-to-noise ratio goes up and sound sounds less noisy. Maybe it's just a matter of filtering the power going to the output chips, because the line outputs used with a separate hedphones amp produces much less noise than using the headphones output.
