In the end, it all comes down to a matter of taste, perception, and
implementation of equipment. I'm sure many of us have been exposed
to gear wars in this site and others. For example we've been
exposed to the bantering of issues such as PC vs MAC, Fantom vs
Motif, Triton vs Trinity, Reason vs Reactor, hardware vs software,
etc. etc. etc.
I don't doubt for a minute that there are quite a few who would
strongly disagree with previous statements about Karma's sound not
being that good. And of course, there may be a few who jump in to
criticize the Motif or Kurzweil. It's all opinion. It's a rather
subjective pursuit. Nothing is ever accomplished except inflaming
passions for one's favorite instrument and the generation of
resentments etc. So, in the interests of avoiding a "Gear War", I
hope this thread takes a different approach or is dropped altogether.
The way I like to approach these matters is to recognize the utility
of a variety of pieces of equipment for a variety of purposes. Many
of us who have been around electronic music for a long time know
that there is no such thing as the "One and only, all in one"
instrument you will ever need.
Can the Karma does jazz, new age, hip hop, progressive rock etc.?
Of course it can - and does extremely well. Listen to Stephen Kay's
demos. They'll blow you away. But again, it's just a matter of
taste and perception.
Here are a few links to my demos that were recorded live with no
overdubbing or post production editing. They illustrate some of my
Karmafied combis in action. Basically, I'm hitting the Chord
Triggers while free improvising on the keys. Of course you will hear
timing and rudimentary errors, but it will give you an idea of what
the Karma can do.
