Simple enough question here with some qualified observations.  I  
agree that stripped down to the bare instrument level, the Karma is  
probably not the best instrument out of the current crop for  
reproduction of real instrument sounds.  Now I'm not picking on the  
Karma here..the same is true for the Tritons of course.  To me, the  
Korgs are great at making huge and evolving textural sounds, and a  
variety of other not-so-natural stuff.  Matter of fact I see this as  
an advantage for Korg over the others as they dont seem to be able to  
do it quite so well.  More to your point, when I first got my Karma I  
went out and bought the couple of piano cards for it thinking I could  
use it as a "meat and potato" gig synth...but that did not work out...

The Kurzweil suggestion is a good one..they are very good sounding  
synths, and the preset samples cover a broad range of instruments.  I  
find the Kurz sound to be somewhat dated, but still great, next to  
the newer stuff.  Roland is also great for getting a huge palette of  
usable sounds, but to me I think they try to hard to cover  
everything, and I end up feeling like the Fantoms dont do anything  
particularly well.  Of course a billion hit records have been made  
with Roland JV1080s and such, so what do I know.

If I had to pick one synth to do it all, and to give you very good  
coverage of the real instrument sounds as well as some synthy stuff I  
would go for a Motif.  I think Yamaha is on a roll lately and you  
will not be disappointed with the guitar or piano sounds on the  
Motifs...awesome stuff.

And remember that all the big synths these days have sampling  
capabilities.  The Rolands look particularly impressive with the huge  
color displays.  I guess it all depends on what youre looking to spend.
