I just talked to the owner here a few weeks back (in another group).. I am sure he can fix that for you...
I understand the request to join, I have that for the band group...<internal band members only>
it does give you full control...

short run down below

      Membership Type:    a..  Open (anyone can join) 
        b..  Restricted (you approve all requests for membership) 
        c..  Closed (only invited members can join) If you select this option, web tools that were previously set to "public" will be restricted to members only. Once you have selected this option, you may not change it later.

as you can see, 2 different settings, do look at this.. it will solve your new spammers... the one in lurk, I still get one or 2 in the MS2k group evey so often.. as they surface... before I set all new members to moderate...

as for time issue now, I only see 4 new members added, that isn't that much if you did set it to approve them all... but I would only do the message setting like above.. 
the attachments, pull as you don't want members spreading viruses.. this snap shot was from the midi-sequencing group... ;-) we send out stuff<or use too> the group is dead right now till we decide what we want to do with it or kill it...;-)

     We've already done that when moderator rights were extended to 
  me.  By "closing shop", I meant that membership would be by "request 
  to join" only where I get to decide whether one becomes a member or 
  not.  That's the setting I have for EJ2KarmaTrax.  I don't have any 
  spam whatsoever.  At the moment, this group is an open membership.  I 
  just receive alerts that someone has joined.  If I am suspicious of 
  the newcomer's name, I ban them right away before they even get to 
  post. 

  Frankly, I don't want have to screen and approve every newcomer.  For 
  this forum, it's a waste of time.  I prefer the current set up.  If 
  on the other hand the spam gets so pervasive, then we make our 
  group "approved members only".
