Thanks Roger J and lws724. The control setup was not set to default. I did the diagnostic first and everything checked out. 
Two interesting peaks into the guts of this thing.  If I ever get a break from  the   grind  I'm going to try to figure this thing out.  
Just reading this list I'm absorbing a bit of the language and thanks again for the help.
