I’m still looking for some advice on my floppy drive problem on a K2500R. I was bringing a K2500R back to life which I had purchased for parts. The unit had been stripped of all the goodies before it was sold. No PRAM, minimum sample memory and all ROM blocks were removed but the object files were not returned to base only. I loaded the proper object files. Well the floppy did not mount and failed all diagnostics. I discovered that the power supply for the floppy was plugged into the HD power supply and not the floppy. Because of that miss wire the floppy was getting 12v DC to the 5V DC input. I plugged the power supply into the FDD supply on the board and verified 5vDC and then connected the floppy. When I powered up the Kurzweil the floppy drive fried an IC on it’s board.

I got a replacement drive and installed it but it still fails all diagnostics. If I reverse the ribbon I do get a indicator light which is normal for a reversed ribbon cable. I have checked the new drive in my other K2500R and it works. I took the good ribbon cable and power cable from that machine and tried them in the bad unit with no change. I tried a hard reset and a reinstall of the OS 3.02 still nothing.

So my question is there a chip on the engine board that could have been damaged by the initial miss wire? If so can somebody point me in the direction of repair other than replacing the engine board. I have removed the batteries, power cable and floppy from the unit. I will let it sit for 48hrs and give it another try.

I don’t know if replacing the drive with a floppy emulator would work if there is a damaged FDD controller chip on the engine board that is needed to communicate with the OS.

I’m hoping Roger J might read this and have some thoughts.

Thanks,
Richard
