You can probe it. It has control lines, there logic is rep'd as low equals the asserted state. So if it say R or reset with and underscore below, then it is resetting when that pin goes low. same for other control pins.
The data pins should be active, as they share a bus with the display and midi, aka the peripheral 8 bit bus of the 68000 core.
And the could have changed the drive number to 0 or A. K2000R and K2500R shared a lot and I know all K2000 were 1 or B, but it makes more sense to set to 0 on the K2500, as the industry needs no longer needed both, as DOS was dead in 1995, and the need for multiple FDD gone.
I assume on power on that the LED in the floppy drive lights, then goes out after a few seconds. Power on reset at FDD. Low resetting and hi to operate.
When you install a floppy, does it spin, even if a degree or so?

Thanks for the info. No the floppy cable is not a twisted cable. I did some more research and found in the manual that Kurzweil says the floppy drive should be set to zero. I’ll attach a copy of the page. Not that I believe everything the manual says. Just read the section on how to set the termination switch. I’m sure nobody proof read those instructions. Based on the fact that it functions in that mode at this point in time I’ll assume that to be correct. At this point I’ll replace the FDC chip and hope for the best. If that doesn’t work I’ll go the route of swapping the board. I have a lead on one for $100. This would be cheaper than the SCSI card reader route. If the board doesn’t work out then I’ll probably go for the SCSI reader.
Just to double check that there is no way to probe the output from the FDC chip to check function?

You stated the one that works in a good k2500R jumper for FDD channel A or binary 0. The controller is fix to communiate on B or binary 1. If this is true, if would not mount.
Do you have a DOS era drive modified FDD ribbon cable? These had 5 connectors.. I have used these old style cable when some one brought me a modern plug and play FDD that had no easy or documented way to set to B. These had a split in the ribbon with that section connected to different connector pins. This effectively allowed using " A" FDD as a B. This was back in the day when dos computers had 4 floppy drives, 2 on A and 2 on B. I would slice off the unneeded connectors and retain only the section with standard and the split and moved over connector. These is a quick and cheap way to make an A drive work as a B drive. A "normal k25 add cable has no split. Just a thought to why an A drives could works at all.
Next, both the floppy and the scsi bus share the 8 bit peripheral bus, as does tbe display, midi, communication with effect, scanner, etc. Both have their own controller chips and simple bus chips to isolate or prevent bus interference using a lot of 245 and 244 chips, aka glue.
The diagnostics work well to trouble shoot here, with some cavilots.
Typically the 244s and 245 never fail, more often thru hole connections and trace issues.
Next, I don't recall totallu what j920 was, it has been 10 years since I opened a manual. The early K2500 had a rev A and rev B. They had 2 empty PLCC sockets to add 2 additional flash ROMa when you upgraded to KDFX, as V 4, v5 needed more ROM. The rev C and above came with a simm socket to add the extra flash ROM.
ALSO NOTE, some of these rev A or B rev daughter board need some engineering change orders installed.
Am I "tech talking" in an understandable way?

Ps, You can install a 3rd party scsi to floppy adapter. Then plug that into that a memory card slot. This mounts in the removed floppy hole. This has been well documented on this forum.

I did some more digging and I sent a couple of pictures for you to see. The good FDD drive that works in my other K2500R. If you look it clearly is jumpered to DSO or A . If you look at the blown drive it is jumpered to SO or A also and it used to work before the 12v accident. Both units have HDs also. Is there any communication between SCSI and floppy bus?
I’m not opposed to putting a dab of solder on S1 and cutting the connection at SO and giving it a go. It just seems weird that it would read that drive if it was jumpered incorrectly. What do you think?

First, L2 is removed keyboards, as this is the clock for the Digi effect chip and the keyboard model had a separate clock source closer to reduce RFI. You will have to add a jumper or another inductor, probably using a jumper will be fine.
Early floppy drive needed 12v and 5 volts. Different vendors used different connectors. Some connector could go on backwards, reversing the 12 and 5 volts. I always looked at the floppy drive circuit board for silkscreening of 5vdc to confirm.
FDD have two channel, the A or 0 and the B or 1. Later FDD in the 90s came jumpers for A only, as then plug n play configured. The drive must be set for B or 1, as the FDD control want to see B channel.
This is a DOS era drive.
Yes, could be the controller chip, it is not fun to replace, as it is a PLCC style chip, typically placed in a PLCC socket. As I recall, you may have to remove components to solder back in. I would remove with a small heatgun, beating the center of the chip until all 44 pins get hot and it slides off with gentle pleasure. Place a strip of metal as a heat shield to prevent other components from also being heat too much.
I have once or twice replaced the FDD controller chip, no joy, only to find other failures to be the cause of no mount.
Do you actually need a floppy? You can install setups from a hard drive. The hard drive is DOS 512. The installer asks for source, FDD or one of 8 scsi channels.
You could also place your CPU Daughter board in a good unit and update the setup or o/s. Make sure it is seated properly, as it is easy to do wrong!

I have done hard resets and I even reinstalled the operating system. There are no jumpers on the floppy drive so I guess the drive allocation is predetermined in the OS.
One more question for the expert. Can I use an engine board from a keyboard unit in a rack unit. It appears that the engine and daughter board are the same as those used in the keyboard vs the rack. I see that the rack unit has a location of L2 which is not used on the keyboard unit.
