Hi, Jon here .. I posted my generic setup previously. Thinking out loud
about resolution:
I use a midi interface in my rig ... a motu usb express to be specific,
which is how the midi from my DAW ( digital performer on a mac)
recognizes my K2500.
from what you have described ... 'generically' .. the midi interface in
your rig is missing.
but, since the xr18 is apparently also a mini midi interface ... I would
check if midi in /and/ midi out cable need to be connected in order for
Reaper to see the K2500?

When you have the /audio/ from the k2500 connected to the XR18 ( ignore
midi for the moment) and you arm an audio track that the k2500 is
plugged into ... is there an audio signal present ..... I E can you
record or hear the K2500 audio?
