I was mentioning CryptX because it cross-compiled everywhere I tried (I
use if of all supported platforms, i.e. Windows, Linux (x86, x64, arm,
aarch, mips, ppc, sparc), MacOS, Solaris, FreeBSD and could compile if
everywhere for all sort of Perl versions. Re updating it, I did not have
to but that might be because of the field of use. 

I understand your reluctance because of the build matrix, but on the
other hand, that means that every time a plugin developer wants some
crypto function, he has to include it and reinvent the wheel with the
full matrix (which I did and this is painful) or rely on users to
install something which I think is way to impractical.
