Hello from North America... "Sharpen your pencil" is very common and is used primarily with $. As in quoting a job "we will need to sharpen our pencils if we expect to be awarded this project". You give your proposed budget to your boss and he hands it back to you and says "I think you need to sharpen your pencil". It's as if if you sharpen your pencil, put more focus into your task, the results will come out more accurate/acceptable/lower $. I think it was allot more common with the generation previous to me (my dad would also be about 90 if he were alive).
